Makerspace, Physical Computing & AI Experiences
Makerspace, Physical Computing & AI Experiences
Build, test and bring ideas to life.
Virginia Tech works with schools and partner organizations to create customizable makerspace experiences that connect STEM concepts with designing, building and testing. Learners may use physical models, sensors, robotics, physical computing and artificial intelligence to explore how systems collect information, respond to their environments and solve real-world problems. Activities can be adapted to different experience levels and learning goals, from introductory models and simple sensors to IoT-enabled prototypes, automation and physical AI.
This program is scheduled collaboratively with educators or schools. Please reach out to Jim Egenrieder at STEM@vt.edu for further details.
Grade Range or Audience: Secondary and postsecondary learners and educators, with experiences arranged through partner organizations.
Duration: Half-day
Availability: Available by partner arrangement; dates are coordinated directly with participating organizations.
Program Fee: No cost to participating students, educators or schools. Programs are arranged through school, community or sponsoring partners.
Location: Varies by program and partner arrangement.
What participants may explore
Modeling & Prototyping
Turn ideas into physical models that learners can build, test and improve. Projects can help participants explore engineering design, structure, systems thinking and iterative problem-solving.
Physical Computing & Sensors
Connect code with the physical world using sensors, inputs and outputs. Learners can explore how devices collect information, process input and respond to changing conditions.
Robotics & Automation
Use robotics and automated systems to investigate movement, sensing and control while connecting computer science and engineering concepts with practical applications.
Internet of Things & Physical AI
More advanced experiences can introduce connected devices, sensor networks, IoT-enabled models and physical AI systems that interact with real environments.

Customized for your learners
Makerspace experiences are collaboratively designed around the goals of participating schools and partner organizations. Projects may be adapted for different learner levels, subject areas and technical interests. Educators can also work with Virginia Tech around makerspace tools, project scaffolds and approaches for incorporating hands-on, project-based STEM learning into educational environments.
